Low Self Esteem - Recognising the signs

Self-esteem plays a powerful role in how we view ourselves and interact with the world. It influences our relationships, decisions, boundaries, and even our mental health. Yet, many people live with low self-esteem without even realising it. Recognising the signs is the first step toward healing and building a healthier self-image.

1. Harsh Self-Talk

Do you often criticise yourself, even over small mistakes? If your inner voice is more judgmental than kind—saying things like “I’m not good enough” or “I always mess things up”—it may be a sign of low self-esteem. While self-reflection is healthy, constant self-criticism is not.

2. People-Pleasing

Do you struggle to say no, even when you're overwhelmed? People with low self-esteem often place others’ needs above their own in hopes of gaining approval or avoiding rejection. If you feel guilty for setting boundaries or asserting your needs, your self-worth may be tied too closely to how others perceive you.

3. Avoiding Challenges

Low self-esteem can lead to a fear of failure. You might avoid new opportunities or challenges because you assume you’ll fail or feel you’re not “good enough” to try. This mindset can hold you back from growth and fulfillment.

4. Overthinking and Seeking Constant Reassurance

If you regularly second-guess yourself or rely on others to validate your decisions, it may be a sign that you don’t trust your own judgment. Constantly asking for reassurance can point to a lack of internal confidence.

5. Difficulty Accepting Compliments

If compliments make you uncomfortable or you quickly deflect them, it might indicate a disconnect between how others see you and how you see yourself. A healthy level of self-esteem allows you to receive positive feedback with grace.

Recognising these signs isn’t about judging yourself—it’s about developing awareness. Low self-esteem is something many people experience, and it can be improved with self-compassion, support, and sometimes professional guidance. You are not alone, and you are worth the effort it takes to heal and grow.
